Pre-converting down to stereo in Handbrake mostly solved this problem. Having Plex transcode the 5.1 down to stereo was a total failure and I always lost the middle channel that has dialogue in it. I ran into this issue myself for getting 5.1 audio to sound good on my TV's stereo speakers. Using the audio conversion settings in Handbrake works ok. This avoids having your DVD drive spinning the entire conversion and you can run both MakeMKV and Handbrake at the same time to plow through a bunch of rips all in one go, then dealing with the conversions separately. Then use Handbrake to convert the ripped file. I recommend introducing MakeMKV to your process for handling ripping. If you are deciding between ripping the DVD or the BR from a combo pack, rip the BR for sure. I have an external blu-ray drive connected to my mac mini for the ripping. Last note - our DVD player I compare to is certainly nothing fancy - we are using an xbox360! And we don't even have a Blu-ray player, I have several that were purchased as "DVD/Blu-ray/Digital Download" boxes. I can't see any quality difference using the ATV plex client vs the LG plex client, our home wifi is very fast. Re: networking - the mac mini is wired ethernet, AppleTV wired ethernet (plex client), LG Plex client (wireless). I've never had an issue with handbrake doing the ripping. I only ever tried once to rip the DVD to local storage, then convert with handbrake and it was confusing and I don't think it made any difference. Any tips here to capture all of the audio, or do I need to buck up and get a sound bar that supports 2.1 or 3.1? And, how do these affect a blu-ray with 7.1 or atmos?Īlso an aside - I usually rip with handbrake right from the DVD. I've tried a number of settings in handbrake to record as stereo only but we still seem to lose many conversations or sound effects. Frequently if I go into audio settings on the DVD menu, there is only 5.1, no 'stereo' option. This happens on TV (with 5.1 broadcasting) and many movies. But a lot of times I know we are missing out on audio where it must be using surround channels for conversations, because the voices will become oddly quiet. I always meant to install a sound bar but never got around to it. On to audio settings - we use the in-TV stereo speakers, which are generally okay. Does it matter if the output file is mkv or mp4? Is there something else happening in my DVD player that makes them look better on a 1080p output (upconverting)? I know the DVD player is capable of 1080p. I also have some blu-ray DVDs to rip and I would like them to be a little better than the DVDs, but I don't need full 4K out of them either, 1080p would be good enough for us (it's only a 55" screen).Īre there built-in handbrake settings people use that work? I've read about and tried some heavily customized settings but to me they still don't reach DVD quality (should be 720p?). I haven't quite figured out rip settings that look as good as using the DVD player. My plex server is on a Mac Mini (wired ethernet) and I have a decent amount of fast external storage (several TB). I use Handbrake but have never been super happy with any of the settings. I'm curious what people are using for ripping DVDs.
